United inherited "dishevelled" Rooney Empty

Manchester United coach Mike Phelan claims the club inherited a "dishevelled" Wayne Rooney following England's World Cup flop.
Rooney ended the longest barren streak of his career yesterday when he drove home the penalty that put United on their way to a 3-0 win over West Ham at Old Trafford.
It was the first time he had found the net since March 30, 13 matches previously, a run that started with an ankle injury that many felt affected his performances in those four desperate games for England as they crashed out at the first knock-out phase in South Africa.
Funnily enough, Rooney is now preparing to link up with the Three Lions once more ahead of their Euro 2012 double-header against Bulgaria and Switzerland.
But Phelan feels United are releasing him in far better shape than when they first saw him in the summer.
"Wayne came back to us a little bit dishevelled from his England exploits," Phelan told BBC Radio Manchester.
"But as long as you keep your head up and keep persevering, things like this will happen.
"Strikers can't score every week, much as they would like to. Hopefully now he can relax, enjoy his football and carry on from where he left off."
Fabio Capello recently claimed it took Rooney 600 minutes to reach his optimum at the start of every season.
The 24-year-old has still only reached half that tally and Phelan accepts there is still a bit of work to do before Rooney is back to his best.
"He is not 100% fit yet," he confirmed.
"He is still short on certain aspects of his game but that will come.
"Now he has got a couple of games with his national team and that will possibly help him."
As Rooney will return to an intense week of combat that starts with a trip to his old Goodison Park stomping ground, and includes a Battle of Britain meeting with Rangers before concluding with an eagerly-awaited duel against old rivals Liverpool, United will hope Rooney returns from national duty with a spring in his step.
Victory against a disappointing Hammers outfit, who were not holding their own during a goalless first half-hour as manager Avram Grant suggested, reinforced confidence shaken by that disappointing draw at Fulham.
For Nani in particular, it was a complete reversal of fortune.
Villain at Craven Cottage for missing the penalty that would have given United victory, the mercurial Portuguese winger responded to his inclusion ahead of Antonio Valencia by producing a man-of-the-match performance, scoring his side's second, then setting up Dimitar Berbatov's sublime third - the Bulgarian's third of the season, with a delicate chipped cross.
"It was a really good performance from Nani," said Ryan Giggs.
"His positional play was good. He was staying out wide and getting the crosses in. He scored one goal, made another and could have had a few more.
"I was really pleased for him. He deserved to be man-of-the-match."
Nani can never be an exact replica of Cristiano Ronaldo but his pace and trickery will be invaluable on the occasions, as was the case yesterday, when Paul Scholes was not quite at his peak.
Not that the 35-year-old was totally subdued.
It was his excellent pass that released Giggs to run at Jonathan Spector, forcing his one-time team-mate into the lunge referee Mark Clattenburg felt was worthy of a spot-kick.
Grant argued the decision had been incorrect, Giggs equally as firmly, pointed out that any challenge in such an area represented a gamble, especially when the defender does not touch the ball.
Once Rooney had accepted the gift, West Ham were doomed to their third successive defeat and United were soaring again.
And, while Giggs is still lamenting those lost points at Fulham, he does concede there is plenty of merit in the fact United have scored eight goals in the Premier League so far this term, and Rooney has only been responsible for one of them.
"We all feel that as a team we need to score a lot more goals," said the veteran Welshman.
"We cannot just rely on Wayne as we did last year. Dimitar Berbatov has started on fire but all the midfield need to chip in, defenders, everyone."
