Join espnstar.com for all the LIVE action as Chelsea face Manchester United in the Premier League's traditional curtain-raiser.
Hello and welcome to espnstar's LIVE coverage of the 2010 Community Shield clash between Chelsea and Manchester United, where the first silverware of the season is up for grabs.
Its been a long time coming but football is officially back - and we could not have hoped for a better opening to the new season, as the top two teams from last year face off at Wembley.
Both teams have big dreams for the new campaign with Carlo Ancelotti's Chelsea looking to build on their historic Premier League and FA Cup double, while the Red Devils are confident of snatching back the English crown from their London rivals.
A number of new signings should be on show tonight with both clubs having strengthened their sides in the off-season, Chelsea could hand a competitive debut to ex-Liverpool man Yossi Benayoun while exciting youngsters Javier Hernandez and Chris Smalling could feature for United.
It should be a cracker so make sure you stay right here on espnstar for all the pre-match build-up, team news, and match action - and don't forget to refresh the page for the latest updates!
Both managers are keeping their cards close to their chests and leaving it as late as possible to announce their starting line-ups. However, early rumors suggests that Drogba will start on the bench for Chelsea, while Sir Alex will begin the match with Rooney and Owen up front.
The line-ups are finally in, here are the starting 22 players for the 2010 Community Shield.
Chelsea: Hilario, Paulo Ferreira, Ivanovic, Terry, Cole, Essien, Lampard, Mikel, Kalou, Anelka, Malouda.
Man Utd: Van der Sar, O'Shea, Jonathan Evans, Vidic, Fabio Da Silva, Valencia, Scholes, Carrick, Park, Owen, Rooney.
0' - The teams come out to a huge roar from the blue and red crowd and are greeted by special guests Gianfranco Zola and Sir Bobby Charlton.
0' - There's real excitement around Wembley as Rooney stands over the ball for kickoff, the 2010 season starts right here!
KICK OFF - United kick of the 2010 Community Shield!
3' - Plenty of boos for Chelsea pair John Terry and Ashley Cole, who could be on his way to Real Madrid. Football-wise its a patient start from both teams, with Chelsea passing the ball around the back four and retaining possession.
5' - Half-chance for United as Rooney picks up the ball and fires it up field to Valencia, Ashley Cole makes a hash of his clearance and the Ecuadorian winger tires a cheeky chip which is easily caught by Hilario.
9' - Valencia is involved again as Chelsea allow him to pick out Paul Scholes inside the penalty area, the veteran has all the time in the world but slices his volley well over the bar, early season rustiness perhaps?
10' - Now its Manchester United's turn to look shaky in defense as Anelka's low drive is spilled by Van Der Sar right into the path of Saloman Kalou. The Chelsea man gets to the rebound first but his cut-back runs right across the goal without any further danger. Very open match at the moment and both defenses are looking poor.
15' - There's a few tough challenges coming in at the moment with Chelsea earning quite a few free kicks on the edge of the Manchester United box. The Red Devils are asking for trouble with the height that Chelsea have.
16' - And there's a perfect example, Ivanovic jumps clear of Vidic and head the ball towards the corner of Van Der Sar's net, the Dutch keeper pulls of a great flying save to keep the scores level.
17' - Chance down the other end now as Scholes chips a clever ball over the top of the Chelsea defense which is collected by Wayne Rooney, the England star's shot is just inches wide from a tight angle.
20' - More sloppy defending from the Blues as Valencia fires in another cross, only for Park Ji-Sung's goal-bound shot to slam into Ivanovic. Plenty of action for the neutrals some real nerves for the Chelsea faithful.
26' - The game looks to have calmed down a bit now, with both teams settling into some longer periods of possession. The referee awards Chelsea a contreverisal corner after Van Der Sar is adjudged to have crossed the goal-line but replays suggest he kept it in play, another argument for goal-line technology?
32' - Chelsea are just edging it at the moment with United unable to win the ball ball back. Some good play by Malouda down the right wins a corner, but Terry's head goes well over.
34' - There's a chorus of boos every time Rooney gets on the ball, the Manchester United man clearly has some work to do if he wants to win back the England fans after his poor World Cup.
39' - That could have been embarrassing. Owen collects the ball inside the Chelsea box and swings a looping cross towards the far post. Ivanovic performs a needless diving header, under no pressure, which goes just wide of the upright. He gets a big pat on the back and looks mighty relieved.
41' - GOAL - Chelsea 0-1 Manchester United (Valencia)
41' - The deadlock is broken and it could not have been simpler. Scholes hits a ball over the top of John Terry who is completely outpaced by Rooney. The striker looks up and hits the low cross right into the path of the unmarked Valencia who gratefully tucks it away from 6 yards out.
45' - HALF-TIME - Chelsea 0-1 Manchester United
45' - Well there we go, the first 45 minutes of the season are over and its Manchester United who have a narrow lead. Both defenses looked a little disjointed in a lively first half and Ancelotti in particular will be furious over how easy the Red Devils broke his back four for the goal. Still all to play for though and the fans will be looking forward to seeing their club's new signings in the second half.
45' - KICK OFF - 2ND HALF
45' - Substitution - Nani, Hernandez and Berbatov on for Park, Rooney and Owen
45' - Just what United fans have been waiting for as Javier Hernandez takes to the field, the young Mexican has impressed in pre-season and looks like he could be a star in the making. Drogba is warming up too.
51' - First touches for Hernandez and they're so nearly brilliant. The Mexican striker holds up play and slides a clever through ball into the path of Dimitar Berbatov who stretches but can't quite reach it. No signs of nerves from the youngster.
55' - Ten minutes gone in the second half and its hard to say who's on top. Scholes is running the United midfield and is spreading play well, but things could be about to change as Drogba gets ready on the sidelines.
59' - Substitution - Sturridge and Drogba on for Anelka and Mikel
60' - On comes last season's top scorer, Drogba has scored 12 goals in his last 12 games for Chelsea.
62' - A cross comes in from the Chelsea wing and Drogba bundles over two Manchester United defenders as he goes for the header. There's plenty of time for the London side to turn things around here and the Ivory Coast man's physical presence could prove vital.
66' - The game is getting a little more lively now with Chelsea pressing for an equaliser, first Kalou hits a first time strike straight at Van Der Sar before Essien sends a curling effort just wide of the left-hand post from the edge of the area.
68' - Another chance for Chelsea as Van Der Sar flaps at a Paulo Ferreira cross and the ball falls to Ashley Cole. The ball doesn't quite sit for the full-back and his attempted toe-poke goes right into the arms of the recovering Dutch keeper.
70' - Substitution - Smalling on for Fabio
71' - Substitution - Benayoun on for Malouda
71' - New signings on for both sides, Smalling should slip into the Manchester United back four while Benayoun should take his place behind Drogba in the Chelsea attack.
76' - GOAL - Chelsea 0-2 Manchester United (Hernandez)
76' - It's United's game to lose now as Hernandez marks his competitive debut with a goal. Valencia takes advantage of a sleeping Ashley Cole and swings a low cross to the far post, young Hernandez seems to trip over his own feet as he hits the ball into his own face and then into the net. A clumsy finish but neither he nor Sir Alex will be complaining.
82' - Best chance of the game for Chelsea. Essien threads a brilliant through ball to the onrushing Sturridge who is one-on-one and tries to bend the ball around Edwin Van Der Sar, but the veteran keeper pulls off a great save to keeper the Blues at bay.
83' - GOAL - Chelsea 1-2 Manchester United (Kalou)
83' - What a difference Sturridge has made. The young Englishman smacks a fierce shot towards goal which Van Der Sar can only parry to Kalou, The Ivory Coast international slides in and tucks the ball into the net. Game on.
86' - Chelsea inches away from an equaliser as Drogba slams a deflected Lampard shot into the side netting. Chelsea are all over United now and there are plenty of nervous faces amongst the red fans.
90' - Who says the Community Shield doesn't matter? Into stoppage time now and Chelsea are on all-out-attack with United unable to get out of their own half.
91' - GOAL - Chelsea 1-3 Manchester United (Berbatov)
91' - It's all over now. Chelsea get caught on the break as Nani threads a clever ball through to Dimitar Berbatov, Hilario rushes out of his goal but the Manchester United striker casually lifts the ball over his head and into the net. It's sweet revenge for United after their loss to Chelsea in the same competition last year.
93' - FULL TIME - Chelsea 1-3 Manchester United
The whistle goes at Wembley and its Manchester United who claim the 2010 Community Shield with a convincing 3-1 win over their championship rivals.
Chelsea won't be too upset with their loss and showed flashes of quality, but it certainly would be a surprise to see Ancelotti dip into the transfer market in the near future.
Manchester United, on the other hand, seem to be gelling nicely ahead of next week's Premier League opener, and look to have a real gem on their hands in the form of Javier Hernandez.
Well that's all from us here at espnstar as United lift their 14th Community Shield trophy, we hope you enjoyed our LIVE coverage of what was a truly entertaining match and will join us for the start of the 2010-2011 Premier League season in just under a weeks time!
